Chalani Ekanayake scored a brace as Sri Lanka win Maldives

March 15, 2019 - Chalani Ekanayake scored a brace as Sri Lanka win Maldives 2-0 to advance to semifinals of the SAFF Women’s Championship 2019 today held at Sahid Rangashala, Biratnagar.

R.M Chalani Kumari Ekanayake had put Sri Lanka ahead with a rebound off Skipper I.L Erandi K Liyanage's free kick in the 40th minute.

After the break, Ekanayake fired the ball over Maldives goalie Aminath Leeza after collecting a neat pass from M. Achala Sanjeewani Perera in the 50th minute of the match.

Suffering two consecutive losses in the group matches Maldives also now makes an exit from the championship with Bhutan from Group 'A'.

Bangladesh's second-half surges a key to semis

March 14, 2019 (Biratnagar)- Bangladesh defeated Bhutan 2-0 as they success to enter semifinals of the SAFF Championship 2019 being held at the Sahid Rangashala, Biratnagar today.

Bangladesh had a knack for scoring as the second half surges a key to their victory.

After losing their first match against Nepal, Bhutan Women’s team defense rebounded in a big way against Bangladesh on Thursday.

Bhutan rejuvenated defense gave up a couple of huge plays to end up goalless first half.

Bangladesh were the better side in the match with an overwhelming possession and more shots on target, where Bhutan had to do a lot of defending.

Bhutan had few neat moves but lost the ball often while their goalie Sangita Mongar was busier than her Bangladeshi counterpart Rupna Chakma.

After their early defensive surge, however, cracks started to appear in the second half seeing Bangladesh open an account in the 46th minute.

Bangladesh drew their first blood when Most Mishrat Jahan Moushumi rose high to head in Monika Chakma’s corner kick.

The second goal for Bangladesh came in 85th minute with their Skipper Sabina Khatun.

The win for Bangladesh means, they now secure the semifinal berth with hosts Nepal from Group ‘A’.

SANJU hit a brace as India thrashed Maldives 6-0

March 13, 2019 - SANJU hit a brace as India thrashed Maldives 6-0 at the Sahid Rangashala, Biratnagar in the SAFF Women’s Championship 2019.

India took just eight minutes to get going through Grace Dangmei.

Sandhiya Ranganathan, who was left unmarked inside the box found the net as she doubled the lead for India in the 13th minute.

The Indian team were irresistible and raced into a 4-0 lead after just 27 minutes.

Ratnabalo Devi (45+4’) tucked in a specular free kick as to give India a 5-0 lead till the half time, before Indumathi Kathiresan (22’) and SANJU (27’) had netted for India.

Maldives completely failed to cope with India’s attacking movement and passing’s while India relaxed with the margin.

In the second half, Maldives offered more fight but SANJU effectively killed the match in the 90th minute with her second and teams sixth goal.

Nepal thrash Bhutan 3-0 to begin campaign

March 12, 2019 (Biratnagar) - Nepal defeated Bhutan by a comfortable margin of 3-0 in the opening match of the SAFF Women’s Championship 2019 at the Sahid Rangashala, Biratnagar on Tuesday.

A fairly dreary game was studded with some goals from Nepal as the hosts team grow on confidence taking heart from the victory. 

Manjali Kuamri Yonjan opened the scoring for Nepal after gracefully guiding Dipa Rai’s pass in the 13th minute of the match.

Sabitra Bhandari after three minutes doubled the lead for Nepal with her solo effort beating two Bhutanese defenders.

Bhutan strike line were awful as they completed toothless attack and failed to muster single shot on goal.

Skipper Niru Thapa scored the third in the 55th minute.

Commenting about the match, Bhutan women’s team head coach Sung Jea Lee said he was pleased with the performance of his players in the match.

“Nepal is a better side and they are one of the strong team in the championship." 

Likewise, Nepal head coach Hari Khadka admitted that his players failed to convert the chances tough they won the match.

“I am disappointed as my players failed to take couple of chances. We played well in secod half, we had few chances in first half but could not take them.” said Khadka.
