Nepal secure comfortable victory against Chinese Taipei

Coach Abdullah Almutairi dedicated the victory to frontline health workers in Nepal as Nepal defeated Chinese Taipei 2-0 at Jaber Al-Ahmad International Stadium in Kuwait on Thursday.

Anjan Bista opened the scoring in the fourth minute from the penalty spot after Chinese Taipei's player handled the ball inside the box. It was Bista's third goal against Chinese Taipei in the qualifiers having scored twice in the first round. He had also scored once against Iraq in a friendly in Basra on May 29.

Nepal were in control of the match for a majority of the time and held a superior possession of the ball in the game.

Nawayug Shrestha, coming in as a substitute in the 69th minute replacing Sunil Bal, added a second after some good cross from the left by Suman Aryal in the 81st minute. Bishal Rai's powerful strike in the final few minutes went straight into the goalkeeper.

Coach Almutairi also dedicated the victory to all Nepali people and his native country Kuwait and said winning the game was important for their ambition to qualify for the AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers. "Early goal by Anjan helped us control the match. This is a result of hard work by the players and all the coaching staffs of the team," the coach said.

He once again asked for patience from the side. "This is only the start, we still have two matches to play."

Nepal will play against Jordan in the same venue on June 7.

Nepal expect tough match against Chinese Taipei

Head coach Abdullah Almutairi said Nepal expect a tough match against Chinese Taipei when the two sides meet in the second round match of the World Cup Qualifier on Thursday.

Speaking in the virtual pre-match conference on Wednesday, coach expected the match to be difficult for both the sides. "It's not easy to play in Kuwait weather and it is going to be difficult for both of us."

Abdullah said we have plenty of positives to draw from the Iraq friendly despite the defeat and will go for the win against Chinese Taipei. "We want to secure fourth position for our chances in the AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers and for that we have to go for the win in the match tomorrow," he said. He again demanded patience from a relatively young national squad. "We have not played a lot of friendlies to prepare. We have a young but talented squad of players and we should not be pushing much on them," he said.

The coach was also wary of the opposition. "They have new players and the coach is taking charge of his first match."

Chinese Taipei coach Vom Ca-nhum also reiterated about the hot weather condition in Kuwait. "We are having difficulties in adapting to the weather condition and our biggest challenge has been the weather."

Speaking about the Nepali team, coach Vom said Nepal have a balanced side and good in both defense and attack. "Our key players and overseas players could not join due to the Covid situation and I hope the new players can grasp this opportunity to prove themselves," he said.

Nepal take on Chinese Taipei at the Jaber Al-Ahmad International Stadium at 7 pm local time (9:45 pm NST). The team will face Jordan on June 7 before wrapping up with Australia on June 11.

In the match plenty of incidents, Nepal conceded first, levelled almost immediately, took the lead and conceded again at Al Fayhaa Stadium in Basra.

Alaa Abdul Zahrah gave Iraq the lead in the seventh minute when he scored direct from a free-kick. The lead, however, lasted less than a minute when Anjan Bista levelled finding Santosh Tamang's cross to bundle it past the goalkeeper.

Debutant Manish Dangi than gave the lead to Nepal in the 29th minute with a perfectly placed right-footed shot.

Mohammad Abdulzahra levelled in the 39th minute before Aymen Hussein scored twice in five minutes to make it 4-2 for Iraq in the half-time.

Iraq scored another two through Mohanad Ali Alshammari and Sajjad Jasim in the 67th and 75th minute respectively to complete the victory.

Beside Dangi, defender Gautam Shrestha also made his debut for the senior team.

Coach Abdullah Almutairi said there were plenty of positives to draw despite the defeat. "I take the blame for defeat but I think this team needs time and patience," Abdullah said. "We scored twice and were very close to make it 3-1 but this is football and sometimes you miss one ball and it changes everything," he added.

Abdullah said the players need more time and trust to improve further. "Just wait. They need time and patience. Just wait and everything will be good," he said.

Goalscorer Manish Dangi said he was happy to score for the team on his debut. "It's disappointing to end up losing but there were plenty of positives. It was a good learning experience for us," said Dangi.
