Nepal edge Bangladesh in a friendly

July 11, 2017 - Nepal U-23 brushed aside Bangladesh U-23 1-0 with first half goal from Skipper Bimal Gharti Magar in a friendly held at ANFA Complex on Tuesday.

The guest struggled to make inroads as Bimal Gharti Magar’s strike in the 20th minute was enough to beat the visitors.

Magar had his long time team-mate Anjan Bista to thank for goal as the latter beat his marker beautifully to create the goal scoring opportunity to Bimal who made a swift turnaround shot to beat the keeper easily.

Though Bangladesh enjoyed ball possession in the first they could not really make the pressure pay as the host, backed by a partisan supporter, stood strong in the defense. The momentum shifted towards Nepal in the second half as they continued to push up in search of second goal but absence of Bimal, who made way for Biswas Shrestha in the 31st minute due to a recurring shoulder injury, was felt largely.

Nepal had another best chance to double the lead in the final injury minute when Bishwas Shrestha shot wide off the mark after chasing a dummy that was sold by Anjan.

Commenting on the match, Bangladesh coach Andrew Ord said that Nepali players were quick as expected.

"Nepal’s striker was a big difference. He was strong and powerful. The presence of a good crowd also made the difference,” he said.

Nepal coach Raju Shakya said that the match was a good platform to correct the mistakes before they leave for UAE for the AFC U-23 Qualifiers.

“ In the qualifiers there are very strong teams, but this victory has given us the confidence needed for the big stage,” he added.
