Shakya to lead Nepal U-23

June 21, 2017 - Raju Kaji Shakya is tasked with steering the Nepal U23 Team in the upcoming AFC U23 Qualifier that is scheduled to be held in UAE from July 19-23.

Shakya replaced Megh Raj KC who was actually on the proposal. The senior national team’s coach Shakya is joined by Prakash Aryal as the deputy coach and Megendra Mishra as the goal keeping coach.

Shakya, who has a decent record in the U-23 championship leading Nepal to the title of SAG football in 2016 after 23 long years, has already begun preparations for the qualifiers since last Friday. 

In his footballing career both as a player and as a coach, Shakya has won gold in South Asian Games football in three different roles.

He was as a player when Nepal won Gold in the First South Asian Games in Kathmandu 1984. In 1993, he skippered the side to victory in Dhaka and in 2016 he led the team to Gold claiming the famous Indian scalp from the dugout in Guwahati.

 In the qualifiers, Nepal are in Group D with host UAE, Uzbekistan and Lebanon .

Nepal have their first match against UAE on July 19 followed by matches against Uzbekistan on July 21 and against Lebanon on July 23.
